Career Pivots: How to Identify What Matters Most

Career Pivots: How to Identify What Matters Most

Most people don’t follow a perfectly straight career path. Outside of highly specialized professions like accounting, law, engineering, or medicine, many professionals spend the early years of their career figuring out what they actually enjoy, what motivates them, and what they never want to do again.

Working with candidates through our Lutz Talent division, we see career pivots happen all the time. Successful occupation changes usually have less to do with chasing a title or industry and more to do with understanding what someone truly needs to feel fulfilled, challenged, and valuable in their work.

Many professionals start refining these priorities years into their career. By then, they have gained enough experience to understand not just what they’re good at, but what kind of environment, culture, and lifestyle fits them.

Career Pivots Are More Common Than You Think

One of the biggest misconceptions about changing careers is that you have to start over completely. In reality, most professionals aren’t reinventing themselves; they’re building on the experience they already have and redirecting it toward something that fits better.

Through our work with candidates, we consistently see people reach a point where their current role no longer aligns with their priorities. That realization can come from a variety of factors, including:

  • A desire for more interaction with people
  • The need for a different pace or work environment
  • A shift toward prioritizing flexibility over title progression
  • Burnout in rigid or highly structured roles
  • A desire for more meaningful or engaging work

In many cases, the experience they've already built is still extremely valuable. The key is finding a role that better matches what motivates them.

Defining What Matters Most in Your Career

One of the exercises we often walk candidates through is identifying their “top five” career priorities. The idea is simple: “If you only get five things in your next career move, what do you absolutely need to be happy, successful, and effective?”

Interestingly, most people struggle to answer this at first. Many candidates initially default to broad answers like:

  • Better work-life balance
  • More money
  • Better culture

But those answers usually need more definition.

For example, “work-life balance” means something completely different depending on the person. For some, it means predictable hours. For others, it means flexibility and autonomy. Work-life balance is not always about working fewer hours. Sometimes it simply means having the flexibility to show up for family while still delivering results professionally. That level of self-awareness is often what separates a successful, lifelong career pivot from one that leads someone right back into dissatisfaction.

The Best Career Moves Are Usually About Fit, Not Titles

Another misconception about career changes is that they’re always driven by compensation or dissatisfaction. Sometimes they are, but often people simply outgrow a role that no longer aligns with who they are or how they want to work.

Some people thrive in highly structured environments. Others need constant interaction, fast-paced problem-solving, or opportunities to build new things. Here are several factors that tend to matter deeply to professionals making career transitions:

  • Being challenged continuously
  • Working closely with people every day
  • Operating in a fast-moving environment
  • Having flexibility and autonomy
  • Being compensated fairly for the value they bring

Those priorities will not look the same for everyone, and that’s the point. While compensation and title matter, evaluating the full picture, including culture, team dynamics, and work-life balance, is critical to making a decision that holds up long term.

Successful career pivots happen when professionals shift their focus from “What should my next title be?” to
“What type of job and environment allows me to do my best work?”

Real Example of a Career Pivot

One specific example involved a CPA who started their career working in tax. While they valued the work and the technical challenge, the long hours during busy season became difficult to balance after starting a family.

Through working with a career coach, they identified that their strengths were more aligned with communication and storytelling. Rather than starting over, they were able to transition into a copywriting role within the same organization, leveraging their industry knowledge in a new way while gaining the flexibility to work part-time from home.

This type of transition highlights an important reality: career pivots are not always about leaving everything behind, but about finding a better fit for your strengths, priorities, and stage of life.

Why Self-Awareness Matters More Than Ever

Today’s workforce is more open than ever to career changes, but making the right move still requires clarity. Without understanding your priorities, it becomes easy to chase opportunities that look appealing on paper but ultimately don’t fit long-term.

That is why career conversations should go beyond resumes and technical qualifications. The best hiring decisions happen when employers and candidates both understand what success actually looks like for the individual. What someone values early in their career is often very different from what they prioritize later on, which is why career decisions need to evolve over time.

How Lutz Talent Can Help You Navigate a Career Pivot

A successful career pivot is rarely about starting over. More often, it is about gaining a clear understanding of what matters most and aligning your next opportunity with those priorities.

Whether you are looking for more flexibility, more meaningful work, or a better cultural fit, identifying those drivers is the first step toward making a move that truly works for you. At Lutz, our Search & Staffing solutions help professionals at every stage of their careers to evaluate opportunities through that lens. We take the time to understand your goals, your strengths, and what success looks like for you, so your next move is not just different, but better aligned for the long term. To start a conversation, please contact us.
