What You Need to Know About the IRS’s CP53E Notices
The IRS has begun issuing CP53E Notices following a recent executive order directing federal agencies to move payments, including tax refunds, to electronic delivery whenever possible. This shift is intended to reduce fraud, speed up processing, and lower administrative costs.
Why would someone receive a CP53E Notice?
A CP53E Notice typically means the IRS does not have valid direct deposit information on file for your 2025 tax return. This notice may be sent even if you are not expecting a refund, owe a balance, or have applied a refund to next year’s taxes.
What do I do if I receive a CP53E Notice?
If you receive a CP53E Notice, you have 30 days from the notice date to update your banking information:
- Go directly to IRS.gov
- Log in to (or create) your IRS online account
- Add or update your bank account details
- Confirm the update was successful
Processing generally takes 2–5 days.
A Scenario to Consider
Let’s say you filed your return and applied your refund to next year’s taxes, assuming no further action was needed. If the IRS does not have valid direct deposit information on file, you could still receive a CP53E Notice. In this case, updating your banking information ensures any future payments or adjustments are processed electronically rather than delayed.
What to Know Before You Act
- You will have one opportunity to update your banking information online.
- If the update is incorrect, rejected, or no action is taken, the IRS will issue a paper check (which may take approximately six weeks).
- To reduce the risk of fraud, access your account directly through IRS.gov rather than using QR codes or embedded links.
