Microsoft 365 Series: Understanding the Frontier Suite

Alex Lutz, Tech Shareholder

Microsoft 365 Series: Understanding the Frontier Suite

Artificial intelligence is moving quickly from experimentation to everyday use. In conversations with our clients, the question has shifted from “Should we use AI?” to “How do we actually make this work across the business without creating risk or confusion?”

Microsoft’s introduction of Microsoft 365 E7, the Frontier Suite, signals a shift in how AI is delivered and managed. Rather than layering new tools onto existing workflows, E7 is designed to embed AI directly into the way work gets done, with governance and security built into the same platform.

What is Microsoft 365 E7?

Microsoft 365 E7 is a new enterprise suite built to support what Microsoft calls a “human-led, agent-operated” model of work. It brings together productivity, AI, security, and governance into a single, integrated platform. At its core, E7 combines:

  • Microsoft 365 E5 for productivity, security, compliance, and identity
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot to embed AI into everyday tools like Outlook, Teams, Excel, and Word
  • Microsoft Entra Suite to extend identity and access controls across users, apps, and agents
  • Agent 365 to provide centralized governance and oversight of AI agents

This is the first new enterprise tier in the Microsoft 365 portfolio since E5 launched in 2015. It reflects a broader direction from Microsoft, one where productivity, security, and automation come together as a single platform rather than a set of separate tools and add-ons.

Copilot within E7 is also model-diverse by design. Rather than relying on a single AI model, Copilot provides access to models from both OpenAI and Anthropic, giving organizations flexibility and choice at the platform level.

Microsoft 365 E7 is expected to be generally available beginning May 1, 2026. Agent 365 will also be available as a standalone add-on for organizations that want agent governance without the full E7 upgrade.

How does the Frontier Suite embed AI into everyday work?

A key differentiator of E7 is how AI is delivered. Instead of requiring users to switch between tools or platforms, E7 embeds AI directly into existing workflows. With Copilot and AI agents integrated across Microsoft 365 applications:

  • Employees can draft, analyze, and act on information without leaving their primary tools
  • AI can reference organizational context from emails, meetings, documents, and chats
  • Workflows can move from idea to execution with less manual effort

This approach reduces friction and helps drive adoption. Instead of copying data between systems or prompting separate AI tools, employees take action directly within Outlook, Excel, or Teams, and AI becomes a natural extension of daily work rather than a separate system to learn.

What is Work IQ, and how does it power Microsoft 365 E7?

Behind the scenes, E7 is powered by Work IQ, an intelligence layer that enables AI to understand how work actually happens within an organization. Work IQ brings together signals from across the Microsoft ecosystem, including emails, meetings, documents, and collaboration tools, to provide:

  • Context: Continuity across tasks, teams, and applications
  • Data: Real-time signals that reflect how work is progressing
  • Inference: The ability for AI to reason, not just respond

In practical terms, this means AI isn’t just responding to a single prompt. It can understand the broader context of your work: what projects are active, who’s involved, and what’s already been discussed.

How does Microsoft 365 E7 govern and secure AI?

As organizations begin deploying AI agents that can act on behalf of users, the need for oversight increases quickly. These tools are no longer just assisting with tasks; they can initiate actions, access data, and influence decisions across the business. This raises practical questions we’re already helping clients navigate:

  • Who is responsible for actions taken by an AI agent?
  • What data should AI have access to, and what should it not?
  • How do you monitor decisions made without direct human review?

This is where Agent 365 comes in. It serves as the control plane for managing this new layer of the workforce, extending existing security and governance to AI agents. Rather than introducing entirely new systems, it builds on the same principles organizations already use to manage users and data. With Agent 365, organizations can:

  • Observe: Monitor agent activity, performance, and usage across the environment
  • Govern: Apply policies, manage access, and enforce lifecycle controls
  • Secure: Protect against data exposure, misuse, and emerging AI-specific risks

E7 reinforces this with its broader security stack. Defender, Entra, and Purview extend to cover both users and AI agents, providing identity and access controls based on least-privilege principles, data protection and loss prevention policies, audit trails and compliance monitoring, and threat detection tailored to AI-driven environments. Rather than adding governance as an afterthought, E7 treats security and control as part of how AI scales across the organization.

What does Microsoft 365 E7 mean for your organization?

We often see teams experimenting with tools like Copilot or ChatGPT in silos. Marketing uses one approach, finance another, and IT tries to manage it all behind the scenes. E7 is designed to address those gaps by providing a single foundation for AI, security, and governance across the organization. Employees interact with AI through tools they already use, while IT and security teams apply consistent policies across users, data, and agents.

That said, scaling AI isn’t just a licensing decision. Copilot adoption across the Microsoft ecosystem is still in its early stages, and most organizations are somewhere on the path between initial experimentation and enterprise-wide deployment. Where you are on that curve shapes what the right next step looks like.

Navigate AI Adoption with Lutz

As organizations continue to evaluate how AI fits into their broader strategy, the focus is shifting from experimentation to execution. Platforms like Microsoft 365 E7 bring together productivity, intelligence, and governance, but understanding how to apply them in a meaningful way is what drives real impact.

We’re helping organizations turn AI strategy into operational reality. That means evaluating where AI fits, identifying risks early, and ensuring the technology aligns with how your business operates. Through our Outsourced IT services, we work alongside your team to define a clear path forward and implement solutions that deliver real business value. Contact us to learn more.
